Onam is the most important festival of the state of Kerala. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by people of all communities. According to a popular legend, Onam is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, the former ruler of the State, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of the festival.
Our college celebrates Onam every year amidst much fanfare involving all the students and staff. The campus becomes vibrant with students dressed in traditional outfits and festive songs played aloud. An oonjal or a traditional swing is tied in the branches of trees in the campus and students enjoy swinging in them. Competitions on Onam pattu, Thiruvathirakkali, and Athappookkalam (Floral carpet) are conducted for the students. The students participate in the competitions as teams representing the departments. The judges for the competitions are eminent persons in the respective fields. The winners of the competitions are announced at the end of the day and the prizes are given away amidst a cheering crowd. A Onam sadya - a traditional lunch is arranged in all the departments and the students take the initiative to serve the food. The food items reflecting the regional culinary traditions are prepared by the students from their homes and brought to college to serve for all in their respective departments. This collective effort helps them realise the importance of team-work, co-operation and inter- dependence. In the afternoon session, competitions for teaching and non-teaching staff including Tug - of -war, Musical chair etc are conducted. The students cheer the competitors and the spirit of festivity fills the air.
